Preparing Your Wedding Gown for the Big Day
Your wedding gown deserves the same care on the big day that went into making it. At DeHoney’s Dry Cleaners, Tulsa brides have trusted us with wedding gowns for generations. We have been cleaning Tulsa’s finest since 1921, and wedding gown preparation is one of the services we take most seriously.
A gown that has been stored, shipped, or tried on several times often needs professional attention before it walks down the aisle. Pressing, inspection, and careful handling bring out the detail of the fabric. Here is how to prepare your wedding gown for the big day, and how DeHoney’s can help.
When to bring your gown in
Plan to bring your gown in two to three weeks before the wedding. That window gives our team time to press it properly, inspect every seam and embellishment, and return it to you with days to spare — not hours. If your gown is arriving from out of town or from the designer, bring it in as soon as it reaches Tulsa. The earlier we see it, the more calmly we can handle anything it needs.
It also helps to schedule preparation around your final fitting. Bring the gown to us after alterations are complete, so the pressing reflects the gown exactly as it will be worn. If you use our free pickup and delivery route, tell us your wedding date when you schedule, and we will plan the return around it.
Professional pressing and preparation
Professional pressing is very different from steaming a gown at home. Our pressers work with the fabric, not against it: satin, chiffon, tulle, lace, and organza each respond to different heat and handling, and beaded or sequined areas need special protection. We shape the gown back to the way it was designed to fall, smooth the train, and finish the bodice so it photographs beautifully.
Preparation also means inspection. We look over the gown in good light and note anything that needs attention before the wedding, so there are no surprises when you get dressed. That careful, unhurried approach is the same standard we have applied to Tulsa’s finest garments since 1921.
What to check: loose beading, straps, and bustle
Before the wedding, check four things. First, loose beading or sequins: run your hand gently over embellished areas and look for threads that have worked free or beads that move. Second, straps and closures: fasten every hook, button, and zipper, and make sure nothing pulls or gaps when you move. Third, the bustle: practice bustling the train with your maid of honor or whoever will help you on the day, and confirm every loop and hook is present and secure. Fourth, the hem: walk in the gown with your wedding shoes on and check that the hem clears the floor evenly.
If anything needs a seamstress, it is far easier to arrange that two weeks before the wedding than two days before. Bring any concerns to us when you drop the gown off, and we will flag what we see during preparation.
Transport and storage tips for the week of the wedding
In the final week, store your gown in a cool, dry room away from direct sunlight, hanging high enough that the hem and train hang free. Keep it in a breathable garment bag rather than sealed plastic, which can trap moisture. On the way to the venue, hang the gown in the car if you can, or lay it flat across a clean back seat — never in a hot trunk for hours. Once you arrive, hang it up right away so gravity can relax the last of the travel folds.
Pack a small emergency kit for the day: safety pins, fashion tape, a needle and thread matched to the gown, and a clean white cloth. If something spills, blot — never rub — and save the rest for professional cleaning after the wedding.
After the wedding: cleaning and preservation
When the celebration is over, bring your gown back to us promptly. Champagne, grass, perspiration, and invisible spills can set over time, and early cleaning gives the best result. We clean wedding gowns with the same care we use in preparation, and we can preserve your gown in archival materials so it can be kept, handed down, or simply remembered exactly as it was.
